First there was the Roubaix Ride (2007). Then came the Ronde Van Walcot (2008) followed by La Fleche Avon (2009). What's in store for this year? Well, the professionals will be in the Netherlands, tackling the Amstel Gold Race. http://www.amstelgoldrace.nl/index.php?pageId=1 As for us, break out the retro cycling gear and keep the winter tyres rolling (you really don't want to bring your best climbing wheels!) as we tackle the Amstel Golden Coffee Race. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/400168 52 km (32 miles), climbing 1009m (3310 feet) and featuring some of the best views you can get across Bath and the surrounding valleys. Who will dig deep, crossing the waters of the Kennet & Avon Canal, conquering the slopes of Little Solsbury Hill and rising to the heights of Soper's Wood so they can be the first to the coffee shop. We give you the Amstel Golden Coffee Race. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <6EDEF2640C8E4CABB92B76B9ECF95281@Denali> Many of you will know that Chippenham Wheelers organise a open session at Castle Combe Race track on Tuesdays nights. As of the beginning of April these have been running again. It is a great training opportunity as you can whiz around the track to your hearts content for several hours, un-accosted by cars; all for the ?Princely? price of ?1.00 (payed on the gate before going onto the circuit for the first time). For those of you who are thinking of having a crack at some racing this year it is a great opportunity to learn a few skills in a less hostile environment(!)with some like minded folk. I am offering to organise some simple sessions to help us all get more out of racing for the same club; this week will be about pace lines and some sprinting and would be good for anyone entering road races or sportives. This week the pace will be pretty steady, and sprinting will be paced by yourself. The track is available from 17:30 and I will be aiming to start some training at about 18:00. I suggest we meet at the entrance to the pit lane (for those not familiar with the circuit ride around anti-clockwise from the gate as you go up the drag to the start finish line you will see the pit lane entrance on the right), we will have a quick chat before heading out onto the track to do some laps. I will be on a yellow and black BMC wearing a Walcot jersey. If the weather looks dodgy (wet) give me a call ? 07977587364 to check what is happening. Any questions drop me a mail. It is great fun and surprisingly addictive. Below is a list of events in the southern / southwest districts ( I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the dates - Please check on BC / RTTC websites), there are a few TTs thrown in for good measure. I am planning to ride quite a few of these events and it would be great to have more than one Walcot jersey in the bunch. Transport is often a problem, so can I suggest that if you are going to enter a race then you post on the email to let others know, allowing some transport co-ordination. I am happy to help co-ordinate. I can probably offer some transport (to events I am going to!) on a first come first served basis. I have listed the races I am currently (it could change!) planning on attending in the second table (note I am also planning to do many of the Castle Combe Summer Series. Many of you will know that Chippenham Wheelers organise a open session at Castle Combe Race track on Tuesdays nights. The Cumbrian Killer, 2nd May 2010 In it's second year in 2010, this cyclosportive traverses some of the best cycling country in Britain, if not the world! The event starts at Dallam School on the North Lancashire / Cumbrian border and takes in some of the legendary climbs of the English Lake District. With approximately 2,620 metres of climbing over 88 miles (full course) through superb mountain scenery, it has become a classic sportive route, appealing to Expert Sportive Riders who relish a magnificant challenge. If you're going to miss the Fred Whitton this year or want to warm up properly for it, then this is the event for you! The climbs of Kirkstone Pass (16%), Red Bank (25%), Blea Tarn (25%) and the legends of Wrynose Pass (25%) and Hardknott Pass (30%) all feature with an unforgettable descent of "The Struggle". There is a shorter course of 73 miles with 2,000 metres of climbing to allow cyclists to enjoy more of the majestic landscape of the Lake District. The event costs ?35 to enter which includes feedstops, electronic timing, a fully signed course and a sag wagon for support. The 2 feed stations will be available at 30 miles and 60 miles to keep you going. Photographs and results will be available soon after the event. You enter by post, or more conveniently, you can enter online. Please click one of the links below: Download the Entry Form or click here to enter online via SPORTIdent. Entry is limited to approximately 150 participants. You need to enter fairly soon as entry is starting to fill up. Please don't enter unless you are sure you are experienced enough to take on this challenge. Riders who have tackled the Fred Whitton, Rydale Rumble, Marmotte or the full Dave Lloyd Mega Challenge would be suitable for this type of event. Merrifield is a great circuit near Yeovil and is fantastic for those new to racing. Iain and Tony raced in the 4th Cat race both finishing well in the bunch, both looked remarkably calm and collected after their first race of the year. So much so both were considering having a go in the next race!! Ian(S) raced in the 3rd Cat race. The start was delayed by nearly an hour due to a crash in the previous race. It was a fast race with lots of attacks, non of which got away. Ian finished just outside the top 10 (preliminary) after having a sizable ?indiscretion? with another rider on the final bend!! * Sunday saw Pete Giddings and Ian Savage heading down south to ride the Peter Rigby Memorial Road Race near Fareham, this is the first time this road circuit had been run for many years, it is fair to say that it is a fairly lumpy course! A crash on lap 3 saw the bunch split just before the main climb in the circuit. Ian and other riders jumped to try to re-catch the main group, working hard until the rejoining the bunch about 3 miles later. Ian dropped off the back next time around on the main climb legs empty after a hard effort and the previous days racing. Pete remaining oblivious to this and decided ?enough was enough? and attacked the bunch with a few laps remaining. Although the attack with two other riders failed it did show several competitors weaknesses. Pete opened up second on the final climb and sprint to the finish, making hefty in-roads into the lead rider, unfortunately he was robbed of the win by his ?rather dodgy far easten groupset?(!!!!!!!) with a duff gear shift leaving him in a, not-to-be-sniffed-at, excellent second place overall. If that?s wet your appetite why not come up to Castle Combe Race circuit on Tuesday evening. Following from last week I will be organising some racing skills riding again and anyone is free to join in. Do not worry if you missed last week, you will soon get the hang of it. This week I am planning to do some more pace line work coupled with some sprinting, both of these are valuable for racing and sportive riding, helping you to save energy and jump to a group in front or the finish line. Alternatively you are more than welcome to take advantage of the circuit as you wish. Entry is a ?1.00 to be placed in the honesty bag at the side gate entrance onto the track. If you fancy a go and also plan to cycle up to the circuit there will be a group leaving Batheaston at 17:30 (prompt); meet in the bus stop / carpark opposite the George & Dragon Pub. I will be at the circuit from between 17:30 and 17:45, aiming to start the race training at around 18:15 Fantastic to see other Walcot jerseys racing at the weekend, and congratulations to Pete. Thanks also to you Ian for organising the Castle Combe training - I've enjoyed it a lot and recommend it to everyone. Regarding the racing (road and TT) and as someone just getting back into cycling after a long long lay off it would be very helpful to know when and where local races are coming up. Are there any web links or other sources of info?? regards Martin ----- Original Message ----- From: Ian Savage To: vc-walcot@vc-walcot.com Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2010 9:50 PM Subject: [VC Walcot] VC Walcot Racing Round-up and Castle Combe This weekend saw considerable VC Walcot activity in the racing stakes, including time trials and Circuit racing on Saturday and Road Racing on Sunday. a.. Ian Savage, Iain Cade and Tony Solon all raced at a very sunny Merrifield airfield on Saturday. Ian finished just outside the top 10 (preliminary) after having a sizable 'indiscretion' with another rider on the final bend!! a.. Sunday saw Pete Giddings and Ian Savage heading down south to ride the Peter Rigby Memorial Road Race near Fareham, this is the first time this road circuit had been run for many years, it is fair to say that it is a fairly lumpy course! Pete remaining oblivious to this and decided 'enough was enough' and attacked the bunch with a few laps remaining. Although the attack with two other riders failed it did show several competitors weaknesses. Pete opened up second on the final climb and sprint to the finish, making hefty in-roads into the lead rider, unfortunately he was robbed of the win by his "rather dodgy far easten groupset"(!!!!!!!) with a duff gear shift leaving him in a, not-to-be-sniffed-at, excellent second place overall. If that's wet your appetite why not come up to Castle Combe Race circuit on Tuesday evening.
