Unfortunately the weather caused problems again but despite all the rain the course rode well albeit a little damp and a tad murky. Only 3 brave riders took to the start (James F, Caroline and Liz) with me time-keeping. There was also belated roadside support from Tim Wheeler. Times as follows: James 26-04 Liz 29-30 Caroline 29-59 Caroline was particularly pleased to go under 30mins which was her goal before setting off. On a better evening she would've knocked even more seconds off her previous best of 30-29 over the 9.2 miles course. The 15 points ensured James' position in the overall top 10 for the series. In what was a real mix of distances and courses this year Barry once again triumphed as club TT series champion and wins himself another piece of special edition VC Walcot alternate clothing. If you've seen the white long sleeved jersey he currently owns you'll know what I mean. Top 10 overall: Barry Holley Tom Marshall Mark Baile Rick Hewes Tavis Walker James Ford Laurie Chalk Liz Hufton Ian Savage James Lamb Barry is now riding a TT bike with a rear disc and has even been seen with a TT helmet and skin suit. Everybody else should start their prep for next season now!!! ***Next club event will be the Club Hill Climb on 18th October*** - more details to follow nearer the time. It would be great to have strong club support (both in terms of entries, and road-side helpers) to ensure a successful event and to reinforce the club?s profile. Race entries (closing date 22 September) Hill climbs are great fun and cater for riders of all abilities. It is great way to end a long (and hot?) summer. For those 5 minutes or so of racing, you?ll feel like Bradley Wiggins on the slopes of the Pyrenees. In the words of Paul Sherwen; it is time to open the suitcase of courage. An Entry form is attached (note the Hill Climb section is on page 2). Completed entry forms should be sent to Pete Giddings, 19 Hampton House, Grosvenor Bridge Road, Bath, BA1 6BE. Cheques for ?7 should be made out to Velo Club Walcot. The closing date is 22 September 2009, and early entries are encouraged. Details can be found on http://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/ Not only will there be prizes for the top three individual times overall, there will also be a prize for the fastest club in the West District region (based on the top three riders in the team). Obviously VC Walcot needs to crush all before us in this category so please support the club! Marshals and other helpers There are several other areas in which we require your help. If you are unable, or would prefer not to ride, it would be great if you could still marshal, or volunteer for another luminous-jacket wearing position. Please let me know (preferably by return email) whether you are able to help out on the day. Spread the word As mentioned above, it would be great to have as many entries as possible. Please mention the event to anyone else who you think might be interested. I have sent emails to other clubs in the region and if you would like a copy of a ?flyer? to pass on, please let me know. Calling all Graphic Designers There are also other ways to help! Does anyone have experience with Graphic Design, and would they be willing to design a professional-looking Starter and Finisher sheets? The Starter sheet would be sent out to all competitors and the Finisher sheet would be projected onto the wall in the Race HQ after the event. All good advertising for budding graphic designers We also need a Chequered board for the finish line. Does anyone have such an item already or can they produce one? Once, again please support the club for this great event and get your entries in now! Please feel free to email me or Pete with any queries! It would be great if some of you could help him get some photos to make his sales-pitch more appealing. Also, if your employer or other companies you have contacts with may be interested in sponsoring the event then please let me know. I can contact them directly with details of whatis involved. Hopefully you have all been telling your cycling friends, triatlete buddies and reminding people to get there entries in to me ASAP. Also, if you aren't marshalling on the day (if you would like to get in touch) then you can enter youreslf, we need Walcoters to ride too. *------- In preparation for VC Walcot's first open event, the Hill Climb up American Museum Road, I was hoping to check a couple of methods for taking photographs. Some of it involves quite a tricky technique, so I was hoping some people might be around at some point this week or weekend to quickly do a quick rep or two up the top of the road that the American Museum is on. You only need to do a short section just so I can get a couple of shots to check it works and so I have some samples for pitching a hill climb article to a cycling magazine in return for contributions to the prize list/money. I'm around tomorrow (Friday afternoon), so if anyone who works at the university campus or is passing by between 1700 and 1800 that would be great. Otherwise an hour at the weekend. If people could let me know when they might be willing and able to come, so I know when I should be there or not. Then I'll send another email with the most mutually convenient weekend time. I did a few yesterday (see the link below) but would like to get a few more to make sure it's fairly reproducible for the event. However, the show goes on (especially as the weather looks fine this weekend) so is there someone out this Sunday who can have a route in mind for the club ride? Either that or you will have to improvise on the day or cut straight to the coffee shop! Cheers Jonathan. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hill climb season is upon us. The Frome and District Wheelers are holding their club event this Sunday up the Westbury White horse and I will be leadng a ride out there to take part/spectate (your choice). Te event is enter on the line and costs ?2 we'll need to be out there by 0930 so I propose to leave the Guildhall at 0830 to give us time to get there and sign on. Last year it was a great day and the F&DW folk are friendly. It'll be a great warm up for the club open on the 4th October and the club championship on the 18th October and a good ride as well. On the subject of hill climbs,we still need 4 more marshalls for the open event to go ahead and keep the course safe. It really is vital that we have all the marshalls. If you can help for an hour or so on the 4th that would be great. If you aren't marshalling then why not ride, James Ford is so far the only representative for the club. Tav, Tony, Mark B, Darren & Jim you could all be in with a shout at being fastest Walcoter on the day and up there with the best. It is really important to me that we are well represented at our own event. Please get your entries in to me or ring to let me know they are on their way (07886 267 561). Finally, if you really don't want to ride then cheer, heckle and clap the riders. Spectating is a big part of hill climbs and it helps make the day. The cyclo-cross season is well under way with 2 rounds of the Western League already completed. At the Gloucester City event 2 weeks ago Barry once again made the podium with Pete hot on his heals in 6th. Mark Smith finished in the main field. On Sunday the Western and Wessex leagues combined in Swindon with over 120 riders taking part in the main race. Pete finished in a very competitive 17th overall just behind the elite riders, Mark Smith and Jon Brunt rolled in with the main bunch. Jon in particular got to know the course well inspecting it from a very close angle on a couple of occasions ;-) The Western League continues throughout the winter so if you fancy keeping Barry and Pete company and representing the club then why not give it a go? Mark and Pete were in action the day before as well at the Yeovil CC Open 10 on U30/10 based at Podimore just off the A303. Barry, Michelle, Low, Mark and I also entered. The light winds and warm September sunshine made for some fast times on a course not considered to be one of the fastest. Barry 21:21 (3rd) Pete 22:28 (19th) Laurie 24:47 (PB) Low 25:34 (4th lady) Mark 25:55 Michelle 27:20 (PB) If you ever want to end the season in a relaxed atmosphere head for this event. Good HQ, fastish course and great post-race cake. What more can I say! Congratulations also go out to Tavis and Ian S who I'm told have gained their 3rd Cat licenses for next year. Can't quote any results because I don't have them to hand but I'm sure they tell you all about it when you next see them. Finally, if you're not riding or marshalling on Sunday for the Open Hill Climb then please come along and support. Pete and James F have put a huge amount of work in getting this event off the ground. I can't stress enough what a big thing this is for the club! It promises to be a fantastic afternoon with plenty of good local and even national riders on show. See you all there.
